Sewer overflows and backups can cause health hazards, damage the interiors of homes and businesses, and threaten the environment. A common cause of overflows is sewer pipes blocked by grease. Grease gets into the sewers from household drains, as well as from poorly maintained grease traps in restaurants and other businesses.
Grease should never go down the sewer or storm drain. To remedy this problem, EDCO has established a Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) collection program where residential customers can drop off their used cooking grease at their drop off facility in San Marcos free of charge. The collected grease is then shipped to a refining facility where it is processed into biodiesel.
