The process of taking water from lakes, streams, reservoirs and even the ocean and converting it into safe and reliable drinking water is complex and requires highly trained individuals. In addition, the process of taking wastewater from homes and businesses and making it safe for discharge to the ocean, reuse for irrigation or purification for drinking water is also highly complex. These processes require water and wastewater operations professionals with specific training and certifications. Further, the growing complexity of California's increasing water challenges requires trained water leaders to guide the water industry into the future. Fortunately, San Marcos is a hub for excellent educational training offered at our local colleges below:

Palomar College

The Water and Wastewater Technology programs at Palomar College provide pre-employment training as well as advanced courses in Water and Wastewater Technology for those wishing to become certified for a career as a water or wastewater operator. Trained and qualified operators ensure reliable operation of water facilities and protect public health. For individuals interested in helping the environment while working to support the basic services of a community, a career in water or wastewater technology may be worth exploring.

CSU San Marcos - Water Resources Management and Leadership Certificate

Few people disagree that water and quality of life go hand in hand. This condition is especially true in drought-prone Southern California, where the combined engines of population growth and development increasingly stress our ability to provide high-quality water. To meet these challenges, there is an urgent need to train competent and informed leaders and managers to guide the water industry into the future.

This is no easy task as water issues are becoming increasingly complex. Today’s leadership must deal with new challenges emerging from financial, legal, climatological, environmental, technical and even cultural domains. It is often said there is a “tsunami” approaching with respect to losing water industry professionals through retirement, taking with them their insights, skills and experience needed to guide water organizations through the 21st century.

To address this challenge, in 2014, Extended Learning at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) announced a new course entitled “Survey of Water Management in Southern California.”  The Vallecitos Water District helped develop the course in collaboration with other local industry leaders to help prepare for the looming shortage of people with enough knowledge and experience to manage a water or wastewater utility.  CSUSM and the regional water industry then joined to develop a unique Water Resources Management and Leadership certificate program. The sole objective of this partnership was to prepare present, and future, water personnel with the requisite knowledge and multidisciplinary skills to do the job and do it well.
